Editor’s Note: The author casts this horrific play with members of two denominations of Islam, Sunnis and Shias. But he devotes two concluding paragraphs to the source of the devastation and sadness that is Iraq:

“The mounting violence in Iraq thus reflects both the long-term impact of the US invasion and occupation of that country, as well as the most recent intervention by American imperialism that seeks to destabilize neighboring Syria.

“Once again, unverified claims of threats of “terrorism” are being used to justify US military aggression and political subversion in a country that has already suffered an historic catastrophe from eight years of war and occupation.”

Whoever is doing the killing now and bringing about even more suffering to the Iraqi people, let us never forget that it was the unilateral (and criminal) war on the country … the people … by the United States government that brought all this to pass. As the US et. al. continue their international rampage in Syria, we must put it in a perspective of 9/11, Afghanistan, Libya, Palestine, Sudan and Iraq.
